I have the honour to inform you that the

Director of Public Works has recently brought to my notice

that his Department has within the last few years accumulated

in connection with its Water and other Works a considerable

quantity of machinery requiring special supervision to prevent

undue depreciation. The Workshop of the Public Works Depart-

ment has also lately been fitted with superior plant which

enables it to turn out work formerly given to local Engineering

Firms at a saving to Government estimated at 38,360 during

the year 1904. It is now proposed to further add to the work

done in this way, which is of high quality, and to put the

Workshop Accounts on a commercial basis.

During the past year the the shop has been

under the immediate charge of Mr. V. Watson who was appointed

locally early in the year to a vacancy among the Overseers of

the Second Class. He holds a First Class Certificate from the

Board of Trade as a Marine Engineer and has given ample proof

of the value of his skilled supervision. He is, however, un-

willing to remain on his present salary and in view of his
